But it wasn't just a summoning spell, it was also a binding spell. It was horrible indeed as was the Demon who had been called. While Maggie was drawn to the magic she was repulsed by The Demon. The Demon who's name was lost in antiquity if he had ever possessed one. The Demon was easily nine feet tall with a torso that could barely be distinguished from the head atop it. It's mouth had dozens 6 in long razor sharp teeth. He possessed seven ( why not the usual six? ) arms each with a long claw, cloven hooves and a reptilian tail and leathery wings, the effect was terrifying and as if that weren't enough he was a glowing transparent red that Maggie thought she could see gravestones through! This had been how the trouble began and how it would end, in terror!
To start, overall I enjoyed the story and the concept. There were times that it was a bit slow. The characters could have had more depth, especially Maggie, some of her behaviors were a surprise and subtly unsupported by the character introduced in the beginning of the book. There were indeed some interesting characters in the story which would have benefited from more developed, there's so much potential there. The writing and editing was decent. Once again I enjoyed the story and hope see growth in the next book in the series.

Scottish Rite Maggie Devereaux Book 1 edition by Stephen Penner Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really liked these books. They kind of remind me of Karen Ann Moening's Fever series. The first one does take awhile to get into. There is a lot of history and detailed description of language. These are not urban fantasy fluff but very well written. If you're a Scottish or Irish fan you'll love these books, I did. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of how much of the book it takes before we understand the reason for all the backstory. Even considered giving up on the first book for a few minutes. So glad I didn't.
If you have time to kill then you might want to read this book. But it's just alright, nothing spectacular.
The book did keep me guessing in regards to who the killer was and I wasn't expecting the ending.
Main character was lacking any and all spunk, which made the book a little slow going. I don't know why people answered any of Maggie's questions, she didn't come off charming, to me she came off annoying and a know it all.
The book also slowed because of useless information, why would we care if Maggie and her date didn't split a dessert or who would pay the bill? It lends nothing to the story or the romance, which there was no romance anyways.
The story starts quickly but very soon slows to a crawl. Though it develops very gradually, very few of the characters have much depth. Physical descriptions are pretty much absent. Many writers use character interactions to create perspective, interest, and substance. That is almost completely lacking here. While it is possible this author is planning to accomplish some of that in future sequels, the absence is very notable here.

The aforementioned aside, there is something about the main character, Maggie Devereaux, that is attractive and draws interest. I think it's curiosity as to just where she is heading and the choices she makes along the way. Unfortunately, she is the only person the author makes any real effort to develop. Even so, she comes across as very self-centered and mostly out-of-touch with those around her.

Despite all this, the storyline is sufficiently developed as to create interest in where it will be taken in the next book - especially in the hope that more substance will be added in that novel to help make the characters really come to life for the reader.
This is one of the best paranormal mysteries that I have read in a long time and some of the novelty of the story is that the author used many Gaelic words with the interpretation immediately following, which gave the story a true feel of Scotland. Margaret (Maggie) Devereaux, a young American woman working on her Ph.D. in Celtic languages enrolled in the University of Aberdeen in Scotland to finalize her requirements. Her recently deceased grandmother, Kate NicInnes Ingram, encouraged her to do this and gave her five Gaelic books. She taught Maggie to read and speak it and she gave her a pendant identifying the clan she came from. Kate also bequeathed her estate to Maggie, which allowed her to study full time. Upon moving to Aberdeen, she lived with her cousins Alex and Lucy MacTarry. She met a nice, intelligent, handsome Scot, lain, who worked for the MacTarrys in their store.

At the university, she met another American girl, Kelly Anderson and two nice young women of Scotland, Ellen Walker and Fionna FitzSimmons. In the course of her studies, she went to the large public library of Aberdeen, which housed many Gaelic books in old Gaelic, middle Gaelic and more modern Gaelic. In the basement of this library where the light was so dim, she could scarcely read the titles, she found a truly old book with leather covers so encrusted with dirt and slime, she could scarcely handle it. It took her three days to translate the title because it was old Gaelic and to her amazement, she discovered it was a book of dark spells. Three young women were murdered and the way their bodies were left, it appeared to be ritual murders. And this was the crux of the story. Who was performing the murders? Were they ritual? And for what purpose? Maggie used her talents and education to bring the murderer to light.

The story was complex, characters colorful and fascinating, and the story became a page turner for me. The inclusion in the novel of many places in Scotland with their descriptions and the addition of the Gaelic verbage made this novel more entertaining and intriguing than many mysteries with or without the paranormal. I recommend it.
